Update on Japan’s geriatric crime wave

A little over 4 years ago we wrote a piece on the geriatric crimewave in Japan. Recidivist pensioners were committing petty crimes to break into prison to offset a life of poverty.

Our full report can be found here.

Here are some excerpts from Gendai Business magazine which updates the worsening crisis facing the elderly and prison:

The number of “elderly inmates”above the age of 70 was 1,884 (2.65% of the total number of inmates in 2007) but in 2017 that number had surged to 2,278 people (4.81% of the total)…

…Their crimes? 54.2% of those 70yo+ were jailed for theft, far higher than convictions for possession of methamphetamines (9.4%). 90% of those thefts involved shoplifting or stealing bicycles…

…a 2017 police white paper noted that those over 65yo are 3.45x more likely to steal than minors (14-19yo)...

…Considering that the number of elderly inmates continues to increase, it is not difficult to imagine that the number of inmates requiring nursing care for dementia is rising with it. It can be said that some prisons are already becoming “nursing homes” in effect. If left as it is, the prison will soon be unable to stand...

Behind this is the problem of poverty. The aging rate in 2019 is 28.4%, the poverty rate of elderly households is 27%, and there are old people everywhere who are in need of support…

The last resort to reach an elderly person who has no family or job and cannot rely on anyone, and who cannot live their lives, is a safe prison life that guarantees “food, medicine and shelter”. In recent years, the number of elderly people who are recidivists for the purpose of “going into jail” is increasing.

All of these problems we noted in our 2016 report. Our suggestion was to build huge retirement villages in remote areas in Japan where the elderly could elect to sacrifice a portion of their pension to live without the indignity of living behind bars. As it stands, prison guards will increasingly become nurses, including changing diapers for the elderly.

The Victim?

This is a picture of 88-yo May Boyce who was arrested for aggravated assault after shooting a man who tried to rob her liquor store. Her gun was confiscated by police.

Boyce has owned Murfreesboro Road Liquor and Wines in Nashville, Tennessee, since 1994. She opens and closes the store six days a week by herself.

Boyce claimed the victim, identified as Ramon Fisher, “lunged” at her after picking up a bottle and started to head for the exit.

Fisher originally confessed to police that he and his friend had intended to steal from the store, but later amended the story and said they intended to pay for it. Presumably they intended to pay for it after Fisher was shot.

Interesting how the police call Fisher the “victim.” Imagine if he just paid for it like a normal customer then he wouldn’t be nursing a bullet hole. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Oh, and you’ll never guess what party the mayor of Nashville, who runs the police, is from. Democrat.

Should the 88-yo be given a life sentence or a medal for defending her business because two thugs thought she would be too frail to possess a Smith & Wesson snub nose .38 let alone fire it?

Media Hijacks the #GeorgeFloyd Protests to Fan the Flames of Sedition

No one should be seeking to exploit the loss of George Floyd at the hands of inexcusable police brutality. Sadly, the #GeorgeFloyd demonstrations have been brazenly hijacked by a growing number of anarchists assisted by willing accomplices in the media to fan the flames of sedition. As Hillary Clinton said, “never let a good crisis go to waste!

Let’s not forget that the majority of Americans were united against what transpired. Yet the first thing the press seized on was to promote the idea of division.

Yes, in certain pockets of society systemic racism exists in America. It shouldn’t but it does. No amount of kneeling or social media virtue signaling can convince those who have hate in their hearts to change. Burning down buildings only hardens their beliefs.

We found a curious documentary several years ago about Daryl Davis, a black man who befriended the KKK. Davis found that listening to them was all that was required. He has caused many to hand in their robes. There is reason why god gave us two ears and one mouth – so we listen more and talk less. We encourage you to watch the full episode. It is eye opening.

Unfortunately, as we pointed out a few days ago, the statistics simply do not bear a deepening rift in race relations to be the case.

We also note the benevolent actions of so many citizens during the crisis who have flatly rejected the doctored sentiment preached by the journalistic corps. Armed militia have felt compelled to guard stores across the country to prevent more livelihoods succumbing to senseless acts of sponsored depravity in their neighbourhoods. Desiree Barnes tore strips off looters in New York for the damage done to her community by those who haven’t the first clue what impact their actions have had.

We see these as more accurate representations of the mood of the majority of average Americans than mindless clickbait journalists and Twitterati deliberately try to ignore.

Economist and social theorist, Thomas Sowell once said,

Activism is a way for useless people to feel important, even if the consequences of their activism are counterproductive for those they claim to be helping and damaging to the fabric of society as a whole.”

We posted a video of Washington DC resident Nestride Yumga who took on hundreds of Black Lives Matter (BLM) protestors for rank hypocrisy because they don’t attempt to raise awareness for the 191 homicides in Chicago so far this year.

We noted that BLM have been silent over the death of  77yo African American David Dorn, a retired Louisville Police captain, was killed by a rioter defending a pawnshop over a TV.

David McAtee was a 53-year-old African American man known for providing free meals to police officers who stopped by his restaurant was killed in a shoot out he was not a part of. Where was BLM?

Yet BLM activists have been happy to target white liberals putting black squares on their social media avatars.

FNF Media is no fan of slacktivism, the idea that moral preening on social media is enough to make one worthy. In the end, the cause ends up all about themselves – upping evidence of keyboard commitment to ensure acceptance. Still BLM focused anger at the overuse of their hashtag, not the actual problems of people dying in cold blood.

Many more police officers of all races have been injured, shot and several killed during the violence. Americans are appalled. Violence IS the problem.

Almost everything in the mainstream media (MSM) has become sensationalism writ large. When clickbait driven advertising revenues are at stake and an opportunity to knock off the very head that fuels their derangement, objectivity be damned.

Peaceful demonstrations to raise awareness about corrupt cops and the problems created by centuries of systemic racism are enshrined in the constitution. Trump openly stated he wants to protect 1A. Yet CNN’s Don Lemon had the nerve to call Trump’s actions the path to a “dictatorship.” His colleagues on the scene spoke of “mostly peaceful protests” as one stood in front of a building which was engulfed in 40ft high flames and another dodging bottles hurled at him.

The MSM went out of its way to talk about peaceful demonstrators being brutally suppressed by vindictive law enforcement officers. Innocent protestors have become unfortunate collateral damage in too many cases, mostly due to the proximity of the rioters to them.

Perhaps keyboard warriors might propose what the police should do in order to maintain order? Should law enforcement ask each protestor if they intend to commit acts of theft, violence or assault? It is just not an option when rioters are exacerbating the protestors’ suffering in the same areas. The rioters couldn’t give a damn about George Floyd. That is self-evident.

Think through the logic of those who have spent a lifetime building a business. If Trump says he wants to overwhelm vandals who have no qualms destroying their innocent livelihoods with a bigger show of force where do you think the public sympathy will lie? The promise to follow up with harsh sentencing via the brainless uploading of their crimes to social media feeds will only win more support,

Then we had sanctimonious celebrities spewing hypocrisy behind gated mansions with armed rent-a-cops who would shoot rioters on a whim if they were threatened. Hollywood only proved Ricky Gervais 100% correct.

The Left has demanded Trump reason with the rioters. How would appeasement tactics work with a group who utterly despise him? Had he played defence it would have given the mob a free license to push the crisis into overdrive which is exactly what they crave. After all, the ends justify the means.

The media relished the chance to tag Trump as a coward, claiming he had fled to his bunker. Such calls are made solely at the discretion of the Secret Service, the people paid to protect him. This is exactly why he staged the walk across Lafayette Square ahead of his security team and pose in front of St. Johns Church to debunk that narrative.

Yet journalists devoted more outrage over this action to clear a path to the house of worship than the very acts of the rioters who unsuccessfully tried to burn it to the ground a day earlier. Priorities.

The media repeatedly pushed lies about tear gas being used on those peaceful protestors outside 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Never mind that the US Park Police went on record to deny that accusations and state they had been attacked with projectiles “including bricks, frozen water bottles and caustic liquids” and “found caches of glass bottles, baseball bats and metal poles hidden along the street.” Must be the same peaceful protestors CNN has talked about.

Trump has only one real option – play offense. Which he is doing. Most Americans want an end to seeing footage of police in Buffalo being callously run down by speeding rioters or other cops being shot and filmed as they bleed out. They want law and order restored and the longer it goes the more angry they will get at authorities sitting doing nothing when they were only too happy to issue citations for violating stay at home orders.

Yet it doesn’t matter what Trump does. Even if he delivered the very script the MSM wrote for him, they’d find fault.

We could go on and on.

We should all condemn all violence and vigorously defend the right to free speech. What we are seeing is activists pushing for more of the former and less of the latter. That should tell us much.

We think these riots have solidified Trump’s chances for re-election. Fewer Americans want to be associated with groups that openly embrace thuggery and looting as fair game.

Lived experience through the past two weeks of violence and the past three months of lockdown are enough evidence to prove that Americans are growing tired of anarchy and totalitarianism. There is only one candidate who openly stands against it – Trump.

Two other things we’ve learnt.

The picture at the top depicts yet more sanctimonious hijacking of the George Floyd tragedy by protestors in Sydney (and many other countries). Despite facts borne out of a Royal Commission that aboriginal deaths in custody were no different to any other demographic, woke mobs think killing cops is something to boast about.

The only other thing we’ve learnt is that ignoring social distancing doesn’t seem to be a problem either.

Let’s hope this senseless violence is quelled and cooler heads prevail.

Vegan activists need caging more than goats

Well done to the lunatic vegan activists whose harassment led to the closure of The Gippy Goat Cafe in the Democratic People’s Republic of Victoria. 8 people have lost their jobs as a result of a legitimate business not being able to operate because of the weak application of laws from the judiciary based on toned down charges dispensed by law enforcement. It makes you wonder how theft, trespass and threats of violence don’t rate a mention with the police. At the very least these activists should be forced to pay for the redundancy costs and years of lost revenue caused by their actions. Why should the owners lose a business they invested in all because of the intolerance of the radical left? How much were the activists fined each? $1 for biosecurity breaches! What a farce.

This is what the owners had to say yesterday,

The Gippy Goat Café has decided to close, today will be our last day. We would like to thank our dedicated staff, our social media followers and loyal customers for your unfailing support but we do not have the heart to continue the café. This was not an easy decision to reach, however for the sake of our health and safety and that of our families and staff we feel that it is regrettably the best option.

Our staff and customers have been subjected to nearly 4 months of constant harassment, vile statements and threats from the abusive vegan activists. We have personally been subjected to an appalling stream of threats of extreme violence against ourselves, our family, our staff and even their families. Our staff have been subjected to daily threats and harassment by phone, and we cannot in good conscience ask them to continue working under such a condition. Our social media and review sites have been subjected to false information and artificially poor ratings. The courts have proven to be ineffectual, the enforcement agencies declined to prosecute to the full extent, so, to the thieves, trespassers and activists; you have won. Rejoice in your victory: eight good people are now without a job, families no longer can enjoy the good food and open space, and children can no longer interact with our animals. Society is the loser; the anonymous bullies, hypocrites, lawbreakers and self-professed paragons of moral and social justice have won. Please know that your ignorant indignation, lust for outrage and the false reality you inhabit through your social media streams will prevent you from effecting any positive societal change – only harm to real human beings – and you only have yourselves to thank.

Our farm will continue to operate as before, but is no longer open to the public. We are truly sorry for any disappointment this may cause.

John & Penny

We can be sure that if John & Penny trespassed onto one of the vegan’s properties, these activists would demand the stiffest penalties by dispensed the courts. So typical with the radical left, only their voices have legitimacy.

Crime in London – The Bill’s Feb 2018 snapshot isn’t pretty

3B18DFFD-6270-4B46-AAF5-6FD78180A2B6.jpeg

The Met Police in London has listed the following year on year trends in crime as at Feb 2018 as follows:

Murder: +42.4%

Robbery of personal property: +41.0%

Burglary – residential: +33.5%

Theft from Person: +32.1%

Burglary – commercial: +32.0%

Fraud & Forgery: +13.7%

Common Assault: +9.4%

Sexual Assault: +8.5%

Violence causing grievous bodily harm: +7.7%

Drug Possession: -5.9%

A pretty sorry tale of crime rates in London. The trends since 2014 have been a reasonably steady upward climb. Last year, 891,507 crimes were logged by the police.

The Met has also listed a hate crime section on its website. The YoY stats vs Feb 2018 are as follows:

Anti-Semitic: -1.89% (+40.5% month on month)

Domestic Abuse: +5.8%

Faith Hate Crime: +20.1%

Gun Crime (Lethal Barrel Discharge): +14.2%

Where to avoid in London based on YoY figures?

Knife crime in the Borough of Enfield is +52.2%

Islamophobia in Westminster is +95.4%

Homicide in Southwark is +83.3%

Anti-Semitic hate crime in Harrow +228.6%

Taser Deployments year on year in Feb 2018: +8.7%

15% of the 2649 Taser deployments were in Lambeth and Tower Hamlets.

Is it a question of police being hamstrung from taking more heavy handed responses to crime by enforcing political correct responses or are they just too stretched?

From the London General Assembly:

“Since 2010-11, the Met’s general grant funding from the Government has fallen by more than £700 million, or nearly 40 per cent in real terms, on a like-for-like basis. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, will commit today to investing an additional £110million into the Metropolitan Police in the next year.

Budget cuts have led to the loss of a third of police staff posts, which are down from 14,330 to 9,985, as well as two-thirds of police community support officer (PSCO) posts, which are down from 4,607 to 1,591. In addition, there are now 114 fewer police station front counters and 120 fewer police buildings.“

There were 1146 Anti-Semitic hate crimes against a 168,000 Jewish population in London vs 1,741 Islamophobic reported hate crimes against the 607,000 Muslims living in the British capitol. So Jews, per head of population, are 2.3x more likely to face hate crimes than Muslims according to the Met’s statistics.

Motorcycle theft

Motorcycle theft in the UK is becoming an increasingly bad problem. As this video shows, thieves will steal in the middle of the day. Here are some of the stats by one of the local insurers, Bennett’s.

In 2016, powered two wheeler (PTW) theft rose by 16%. 27,217 machines of all kinds were reported stolen (that’s 523 a week!) and only two out of five were recovered. 25 years ago, scooters accounted for less than 1% of all two wheeled theft; today over half of all the bikes stolen are scooters and mopeds. In London alone, where 4776 larger machines were taken, an increase of 620% meant 6165 mopeds and scooter owners lost their transport.”

The explanation for all this is really quite simple; the interest in motorcycling is huge all over the world, and wherever there’s constant demand – in this case for used machines and spare parts – organised crime is never far behind. At the moment, it’s a battle that the government and police have every intention of winning as soon as possible…However, these new gangs aren’t unique to the UK, and are common in most cities of the world at this time. Many of the continental gangs use stolen scooters and motorcycles as the new currency for buying and selling drugs, and the fear is that this may be the case in the UK. Violence as displayed on YouTube and CCTV footage indicates many gang members themselves may be drug users. Because of this, the police caution against heroism, but do appreciate all the information on these gangs that they can get.

Take a look at this shameless attack on a dealer during operating hours. One can see how thieves would need to be “meth’d“ up to do something so brazen. Good to see the dealers win the battle but the police will back down on any chase of motorcycle thieves if they remove their helmets because of fear of causing death or injury to the criminal. Most bike owners who had their pride and joy stolen would most likely relish broken limbs of the perpetrators.

The UK’s 41 ports handle 9000 container movements every day, and are expected to load at least 12 stolen cars and motorcycles bound for Africa, India, South America, Asia and Europe. The police are likely to check one in every 200, whose manifests will often simply state ‘household goods’ or ‘spare parts’. In just one container, on just one day, in just one port, police found 12 stolen machines worth £70,000, its contents listed as ‘spare vehicle parts”

Affordable tracking devices have become hugely successful in recovering many machines this year, the most popular of which are claiming over a 90% recovery rate. Ironically though, thieves are now using their own cheap tracking devices to find their prey that they fix to a machine and track to its home without spooking owners. If they steal the bike they can use the device again.”

Ironic that the criminals are using technology that is meant to deter theft by leading one to the owner’s home to make a cleaner ‘get away’.

Doesn’t look like the battle to lower theft in the UK can be won without the police being able to dish out far harsher penalties to the criminals. Whistling in the wind won’t stop this.

BBC Radio interview on Japanese crime

Please find the link to the radio interview with BBC World Service here. I’m wondering whether there is more merit nowadays to vlogging or audio given the small propensity to read. The hardest thing is to accept is the sound of one’s voice on tape! What I wasn’t aware of is another person interviewed was my former colleague I sat next to in Tokyo 18 years ago…small world.
