If we were advising the Redskins response to Nike

Nike has stopped selling Washington Redskins gear and won’t resume sales until the NFL team changes its name.

Nike, alongside FedEx and PepsiCo have been put under pressure by activist investors. We can absolutely guarantee that the ultimate customers of money managers – individuals – want decent and sustainable returns, not woke virtue signaling.

Given investment houses often preach about the importance of accurate numbers, due diligence and shareholder returns, why not accept that over 90% of Native Americans have no issue with the name? Have Native Americans come out on mass demanding the name change?

The thing is that the majority demanding the change haven’t bothered to consult the very people who don’t appear to be bothered by it. Another typical woke liberal talking point to post to social media feeds to make themselves feel morally superior despite the fact that the majority don’t represent the very people they claim to.

What woeful governance practices to cave in to activists, who often don’t meet the very guidelines they demand of others.

Perhaps the Washington Redskins should return serve on Nike and demand that using a name from Greek mythology is cultural appropriation and not inclusive of the trans community. It should also request Nike stop making products that use cotton because of its links to slavery.

Furthermore, the use of synthetic materials that rely on the fossil fuels industry must be banned to show its commitment to combatting climate change.

The Redskins management should also demand that Nike force any staff member, executive, supplier, contractor or sports figure they sponsor not use Mercedes for its former links to slavery.

The cancel culture must apply across the board.

#PushBack. The corporate world has no place lecturing anyone on morals.

Self-imposed slavery on the sporting field?

We couldn’t help but notice the kneeling across global sporting codes over the weekend. In Australia, players of the AFL and NRL codes all took the knee. No one stood.

The football leagues across Europe did the same thing.

Have we just witnessed acts of modern day slavery?

No, we are not trying to draw an equivalence to those that suffered at the hands of real slavery more than a century ago. Let’s be absolutely clear.

However it is not hard to see capitulating to the mob by surrendering constitutional rights out of a fear of exercising them as a reflection of the bleak dystopian future that is rapidly approaching.

We can be absolutely sure that failure to publicly submit to causes like BLM will lead to vilification and worse. Best to fall in line (literally) to avoid being attacked and face the inevitable backlash from the verbally violent apparatchiks on Twitter.

Is it fair to assume that every player believed in the cause of kneeling for BLM? Or were some pressured to do so? Did they feel their contracts might come under threat for non compliance?

Worry they might. LA Galaxy star Aleksandar Katai was recently sacked for something his wife tweeted about BLM without his knowledge. Career over. Shouldn’t the incendiary tweets of a spouse live and die there? Should companies have the power to sack us for the free speech exercised by our own husbands or wives in their own time?

Do employers have rights to enforce behaviors of employees completely unrelated to their jobs especially if not bound by legal contracts?

Did woke sponsors threaten to withdraw support if they didn’t make the virtue signaling gesture? Or did the same sponsors fear secondary boycotts and demand players got on message? Will players and officials kneel at every match from now on?

Are police officers – who attend every sporting match for player and fan security – so in need of being vilified each game for things the overwhelming majority haven’t committed?

Let’s not forget the long list of disgraceful crimes committed by many sports celebrities including rape, murders, shootings, animal cruelty, prostitution rings, assault, robbery, illegal gun possession, DUI and resisting arrest to name a few. Are these the types of role models the sports bodies think should lecture the rest of us?

We don’t doubt that most players believe in the lives of black (and all) people but was there any resistance in the locker room beforehand? Did they fear an Israel Folau style social media lynch mob which might drag their own family members in the line of fire for failing to fall to their knees?

The NFL in America marks the next step for the rest of the world’s sporting codes.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made a woefully cringeworthy and cowardly apology for ignoring the cause started by Colin Kaepernick, who will now get to name his price. Watch Goodell make him a race liaison for the NFL. Forget that Kaepernick was an average quarterback when he played. Just sign him ahead of far better players in order to avoid censure. A multi-year lucrative multi-million dollar participation trophy awaits.

Goodell said the NFL condemns systemic racism. Really? Who knew? Why would the NFL have to publicly announce the bleeding obvious? c.70% of NFL players are handsomely rewarded African Americans. Hardly a league guilty of oppressing minorities.

Goodell promised to spend $250 million over 10 years to combat systemic racism. Put that $25m yearly stipend against the $8bn in annual revenue, that is a token 0.31% of that. So it’s hardly a sum relative to the self loathing video made. Still it makes for good headlines. Will the NFL subsidize Kaep out of that sum?

Will fans be subject to a ditching of the flag and an end to the national anthem at the game? Will it be replaced by a minute’s silence where law abiding, open minded and tolerant citizens of all races are required to watch propaganda on police brutality broadcast on big screens to martial music before kick-off?

What is worse is that Goodell skipped over the fact that his fans more than likely already condemned police brutality well before his forced confession reminiscent of an ISIS hostage video.

Is Goodell’s memory so short? Don’t fans just want to unwind from the stresses of family, work and politics by watching their team play a great game?

The NFL might feel encouraged that it’s viewership may have made a tepid recovery from the lows of 2017 but it shouldn’t test the loyalty of fans this way. They don’t pay good money to be lectured over things they already repudiate.

The Australian Wallabies rugby union team is another franchise which succumbed to pandering to identity politics over serving the needs of paying customers. Self-inflicted wound. It will take decades to recover, if ever.

The AFL and NRL should watch their step too. Overplay politics at games where fans go to escape it and they might find they walk away leaving them where they are now – cardboard cutouts in the stands and canned crowds. Don’t mistake any bump in ratings as anything other than a short term COVID19 induced boredom escaping aberration.

To think if the players hadn’t submitted to bondage in the first place, they would have no need to get on their knees of their own volition and beg their ultimate paymasters for mercy.

Cancel culture puts holes in Swiss chocolatier

It seems that Swiss Airlines will remove Swiss chocolatier, Läderach from its supplier list in April over the owner’s affiliation with a pro-life/pro-family Christian organization.

Who is this supposed to help? Passengers have a hard enough time consuming airline meals at the best of times to have the only edible certainty banned. To be honest, how often do passengers actively look through the list of suppliers of crackers, chocolates or packaged cheese and demand a boycott? Why don’t corporates truly work to understand their customers?

For over 10 years, Läderach had supplied Swiss Airlines with small boxes of chocolates that were given to some passengers as a token of appreciation. The company was aware of the CEO’s stance. Why didn’t it conduct proper due diligence 10 years ago?

According to an article published by Swiss magazine “Beobachter,” the airline has a significant number of homosexuals among its employees.

CEO Johannes Läderach denied being against homosexuals.

We have homosexuals working for us, too. We don’t ask them. I attended a gay network event because I wanted to hear what the LGBTQ movement has against Läderach. There I explained that I may have a different opinion on same-sex marriage or on the question when life begins. But this does not mean that I have anything against homosexuals. Läderach has zero-tolerance for discrimination.

Jürg Läderach, the owner of the chocolatier, is president of ‘christianity for today‘ (cft), a Swiss-based group. Johannes Läderach is a board member. cft advocates pro-life and calls for Christian values to be instilled in children.

In October 2019, left-wing activists attacked the Basel Läderach store using butyric acid which causes respiratory irritation, nausea and vomiting. 7 stores were attacked and forced to close for two days to clean the mess. A lot of lost business. Protestors surely broke the law. Repercussions? Probably not. It only emboldens more radical activism.

One has to wonder why Swiss Airlines doesn’t stand up against this form of terrorism instead of giving in to it. The majority of Swiss Airlines passengers probably pay little mind about the views of a chocolate owner. Is everything up for debate? Will something said 20 years ago surface?

As it turns out. Swiss Airlines buckled to a German homosexual lobby group which suggested,  “One way of protesting would be, for example, if hotels or restaurants decided to eliminate Läderach’s products from their range of goods and clearly mark the reason.

Are you noticing a pattern? The list is longer than FNF Media thought.

Nike cancelled a sneaker on the back of advice from a woke social justice warrior Colin Kaepernick who still can’t make the cut.  

Recall Starbucks forcing its staff to undergo compulsory training to understand their ‘white privilege’ over the legitimate arrest of two people freeloading in the restaurant.

Reebok told us about compelled speech. 

The plastic bag boycott movement which in reality only proved substitution rather than reduction.

NY Times hired an editor who openly said she hates “dumbass f*cking white people“. She has since been fired.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed told her staff that she will no longer conduct business with 22 states that have laws limiting the ability of women to obtain abortions, specifically late-term. Sadly for Breed, Coca-Cola, WalMart, AT&T, Aetna, Pfizer & Eli Lilly have donated to politicians who have advocated for abortion bans in some of those 22 states. Will SF City Council vending machines be stripped of Diet Coke?

Multiple corporates folded to Mad F*cking Witches over radio presenter Alan Jones’ remarks over Jacinda Ardern. One has to question the corporate PR departments to flake out over a group who has that as a name. Companies like Koala Mattresses proudly dumped Jones despite promoting its brand via profanity-laced man-hater, Clementine Ford.

The Code of Conduct from the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia has some interesting clauses regarding nurses acknowledging our colonialist past and check our white privilege.

The University of Texas  started the  “MasculinUT” programme. It was organized by the school’s counselling staff and most recently made a poster series encouraging students to develop a “healthy model of masculinity.” The program is built around “restrictive masculinity” and tries to encourage men to drop traditional gender roles to “act like a man”, be “successful” or “the breadwinner.”

11,000 signatories attached to the non-peer reviewed paper which the media made absolutely zero attempts to question the validity of included Mickey Mouse, Aminta Aardvark and Albus Dumbledore. Typical drip-feed brainless and contemptable reporting.

An open letter supporting the Extinction Rebellion threw up some very enlightening facts. Read it and weep. Not the letter – the stats. Perhaps the most hilarious signatory to the letter is Matthew Flinders of Flinders University. Unless the university website has another Matthew Flinders listed as an active member, our esteemed explorer seems to have navigated his way back to life…simply adding to the total lack of credibility of the cabal of 268 academics who believe they have some sort of intellectual superiority over us. If one ever wanted proof of our judiciary leaning hard left, 12% of the people that signed this document were in law-related fields. Eerily, over 90% of the signatories do not appear to be renowned experts in teaching science, much less climate science.

The Inclusive Communications Task Force at the Colorado State University has introduced an appropriate language guide and it has deemed the words “America” and “Americans” might prove offensive to some and have discouraged their use on campus.

Dr. Aaron Brough of Utah State University conducted the study to see if there is a correlation between toxic masculinity and climate change. His assumptions ran the line that men see environmentalism as more feminine and get triggered if forced to make ecological choices if they feel threatened.

The government-funded University of Melbourne allows an artistic performance that requires “paying” white customers access on the basis of signing an acknowledgement of white privilege.

A Michigan State University religious studies professor Shreena Gandhi has claimed that white people who do yoga contribute to a “system of power, privilege, and oppression… White Americans should learn yoga’s history, acknowledge the cultural appropriation they engage in and possibly reduce the cost of yoga classes for poor people, a group that often includes people of colour and recent immigrants, such as Indian women to whom this practice rightfully belong.”

According to the BBC, it was. The UK taxpayer-funded broadcaster is buying into this hypothesis that the CIA may have been too “white” and not diverse enough to spot the terrorist activity around September 11, 2001. Weren’t the whites that founded the agency in 1947 the same thinkers who had the nous to use “diversity” (Navaho Native Americans) to devastating effect to transmit sensitive information during WWII?

We could go on and on – but you get the drift.

There have been some good wins from those that have stood up for their beliefs.

Chik-fil-A, refused to back down on its Christian beliefs that the store was founded on.  It is now the fastest-growing fast-food chain in America.

Adani has said things are progressing just fine.

FedEx told customers that it didn’t like guns but wasn’t getting involved in boycotting NRA loyal customers after the Parkland shooting.

NRA membership searches surged 4900% the week after the Parkland shooting as people valued their 2A rights.

What a surprise in today’s academia. Three scholars—James Lindsay, Helen Pluckrose, and Peter Boghossian—wrote 20 fake papers using fashionable politically correct jargon (wrt gender equality, white supremacy, LGBTQI) and developed ridiculous conclusions with the aim of placing these ‘peer-reviewed’ pieces in high-profile journals. At the time of exposing the hoax 7 journals succeeded in being published, 7 were in the approvals process

This growing intolerance and failure to respect alternative opinions. Instead of openly debating Läderach on how normal the overwhelming majority of LGBT people are, do lobby groups honestly believe shouting them down, using acid, shaming and boycotting will somehow win them over? Not in a million years.

Worryingly, a CIS study in Australia showed that 58% of millennials had a favourable view of socialism. Unfortunately, 51% did not know who Chairman Mao was. Another 32% did not know Stalin and 42% hadn’t heard of Lenin. If we combine with “know but not familiar” with “don’t know” we see almost 80%, 66% and 74% respectively. Oh, how wonderful to learn in school about three men whose social policies led to the deaths of 10s of millions.

Sneaker Wars

Nike is waxing lyrical about selling out its $110 Colin Kaepernick sneaker in 7 minutes online. eBay has these kicks selling for up to $950. Of course, no data has been released on how many pairs were made.

No doubt wearing a pair of Kaeps expresses one’s belief in woke causes as much as wearing a MAGA hat shows one’s desire for having pride in one’s country.

Recall the social justice warrior and NFL kneeler called on Nike to recall the Betsy Ross sneakers made for July 4 on the grounds they hark back to a time when slavery existed. Sneaker.com notes that those blacklisted shoes are selling for $15,000 on eBay.

While not a strict apples for apples comparison given the Betsy Ross sneakers were pulled from sale, at the very least Nike should realize the power of capitalism when the scarcity value carries higher desirability than a has been football player who loves to virtue signal.

Note in the latest Nike Q2 financial results, America was the worst performing market for the company. All the growth is coming out of China.

It is unlikely that Kaep kicks will arrest the dismal growth in home markets. Oh, and for those that point to the stock price, note that Nike has a $15bn buyback program in place and has only performed inline with the NASDAQ.

San Francisco Mayor should mind her own business, literally

The tale of a typical liberal politician. City of San Francisco Mayor London Breed, a Democrat,  said she will no longer conduct business with 22 states that have laws limiting the ability of women to obtain abortions, specifically late-term. At present Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, West Virginia, and Wisconsin have pro-life laws in place. City of SF employees will be prohibited from conducting business travel to states on the list, and from making any deals with companies headquartered in those states. 

The City of SF’s Director of the Department of the Status of Women, Dr. Emily Murase said,

In recent years, states across the country have passed a growing number of restrictive abortion laws. In accordance with Supervisor Brown’s ordinance, we identified state laws that prohibit abortion before viability and have recommended that these states be added to the City Administrator’s list…If any company that is headquartered in the listed states wants to continue doing business with the City, we encourage them to stand up for reproductive rights and advocate for a change to their state law. We applaud Supervisor Brown for her leadership in authoring this ordinance and for continuing San Francisco’s long history of fighting for women’s rights.

As regular readers would know, CM detests corporates getting actively involved in politics that are completely removed from the products they sell. Corporations are completely free to go down the path of whatever marketing path they desire. However, CM doesn’t need lectures from Nike, Gillette or Starbucks on their views completely unrelated to fitness, shaving or bitter burnt coffee. CM would prefer these corporations to leave it to customers to make choices solely based on the combination of utility, quality and price of the products they sell. CM is also against boycotting of any kind. Let individuals make these choices.

Unfortunately, too many corporations are folding to this type of virtue signalling. Corporations cannot guarantee that they have 100% support for unrelated political positions among staff, so why push agendas that have little or no relevance to the performance of the business for the sake of public preening? When scandal-clad banks make overt gestures of their moral superiority on matters outside of their remit, CM reaches for a bucket. On what grounds do banks have to lecture we peons on anything? Hypocrites.

Sadly for Breed, Coca-Cola, WalMart, AT&T, Aetna, Pfizer & Eli Lilly have donated to politicians who have advocated for abortion bans in some of those 22 states. Corporate donations to politicians that may support abortion bans don’t necessarily automatically convert to company policy on the same topic. Will City of San Francisco employees caught drinking Diet Coke be hauled into a room and read the riot act? Will an internal lunchtime order for Domino’s Pizza with 50% off a 2-litre bottle of Sprite special demand staff seek pre-approval from the mayor’s office?

True to form, liberals such as Breed have no compunction bullying big business to toe the line, much like the NBA now buckles to the whims of President Xi. While kneeling for the US anthem or shunning President Trump is considered an act of free speech, it is now mandatory for all players to stand for the Chinese national anthem. How wonderful liberals decide to back the side, not the principle.

Regardless of one’s views on the rights and wrongs of (late-term) abortion, it is rather ridiculous for a mayor to dictate terms to public officials in other states who were voted in by constituents that happen to hold different opinions.

Perhaps Mayor Breed should focus on the disastrous liberal policies that have led to a surge in homelessness, drug use and public human excrement clean up squads. Although she won on a ticket of cleaning up this mess, the trends remain in force with the 1Q 2019 trend at 6,700 fecal incidents. Homeless numbers remain high.

So before Breed starts berating her neighbours for their supposed shortcomings, perhaps she should concentrate on her own backyard first. Better still, perhaps she should run for mayor in one of the cities of the 22 states mentioned and push her pro-choice platform to see how far she gets. Didn’t think so.

The ultimate irony is that these 22 states probably have less to lose than San Francisco does with this action.

More lefty lunacy on criminal language

Only the Left could dream this stuff up. In San Francisco, in order to sanitize the words used by the criminal justice system, a proposal will soften the language to refer to felons and criminals with politically correct jargon to make them feel better. How about not committing crimes?

According to the LA Times, the word “felon” and “offender” will be switched to “returning resident” or “formerly incarcerated person.” A “parolee” could be described as a “person under supervision.” “Convict” could be referred to as a “currently incarcerated person,” while a “juvenile offender” or “delinquent’ would be described as a “young person impacted by the justice system.”

Language shapes the ideas, perceptions, beliefs, attitudes and actions of individuals, societies and governments,” the proposal states. “People-first language places the individual before the criminal record by using neutral, objective, and non-pejorative language.”

Perhaps change the name of “prisons” to “guests of the government“?

CM is sure these loony left policies will reduce the crime rate. Surprised that there hasn’t been a proposal to attach a tailor to ensure that orange jump suits can be changed to suit the impacted person’s individual colour wheel. Surely Nike can oblige with a Colin Kaepernick approved clothing line.

Only the left could crank up the oppression Olympics to such lofty heights.

We, the undersigned, are people of faith and principle, united in our love for America and what it stands for. Many of us marched in the civil rights movement of the 1960s and have an established record of civic activism.

With that background, I hope you will understand how dismayed we were to learn that your company decided to “pull” a specially-designed shoe that celebrated America’s independence and the Betsy Ross flag. It has been reported that you made this decision based on objections from Colin Kaepernick, a celebrity activist and former professional athlete who has become the “face” of your brand.

We represent a variety of races, ethnicities, and creeds. And we agree that Mr. Kaepernick’s views on America and the flag are fringe opinions, not shared by any of us … especially the African Americans who marched against segregation with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In fact, we find Mr. Kaepernick’s views to be ill-informed and offensive, especially to veterans and others who have served this country.

Mr. Kaepernick does not represent us. Moreover, he has tainted our view of your brand. Removing the Betsy Ross flag shoes at his behest implies that your company shares his negative view of America, its founders, and the woman who designed the first flag.

How can we purchase merchandise for ourselves or our families from a company that holds those views of our country?

If this is not the case, we urge you to make it clear that you respect the American flag, its people, and its Founders. We ask that you sever your relationship with Mr. Kaepernick, who has become synonymous with radical anti-American sentiment. And we ask that you make amends to veterans by producing a select run of the Besty Ross shoes for the benefit of veterans groups and organizations that help military families.

For a long time, sport has been something that brings Americans together. Nike has been one of the companies we associate with “Team USA.” Please don’t tarnish that legacy by continuing to cater to anti-American politics.

Nike kicks July 4 kicks on Kaep’s call

Apparently Colin Kaepernick said that Nike’s limited edition 4th of July Betsy Ross flag sneakers could be perceived as harking back to the slavery era. Betsy Ross was credited with making the first American flag in 1790.

Nike has pulled the shoes from stores citing some spurious claims that white nationalists use the Betsy Ross flag.

Good to see Arizona Governor Doug Ducey rescind the incentive dollars offered to Nike to open the plant just outside Phoenix. Ducey said,

Words cannot express my disappointment at this terrible decision…Instead of celebrating American history the week of our nation’s independence, Nike has apparently decided that Betsy Ross is unworthy, and has bowed to the current onslaught of political correctness and historical revisionism.”

Maybe Nike should make a BLM edition sneaker? Better still they can make Colin Kaepernick branded kneepads to help kneelers such as Megan Rapinoe protest the very country she represents.

In rare support of Nike

Who could forget Nike’s political stunt in favour of the kneelers supporting BLM? Recall the millions it paid Colin Kaepernick to tell us about the bravery of those sacrificing everything if they believed in it. Social justice is a thang at Nike, at least among the marketing department. Naturally, it provoked a lot of anger from real Americans who served their country, some who paid for it with their lives. Taya Kyle, the war widow of legendary sniper Chris Kyle, wrote a stern letter to Nike which was on the mark.

Now some are taking Nike to task over the sponsorship contracts it holds with superstars, especially females. Nike does not appear to sacrifice everything, especially when it believes it.

Six-time track and field Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix penned an op-ed to The NY Times telling of the cold realities of re-contracting while considering having a child. Sadly the Nike contracting team is probably staffed with icy cold hard-nosed realists compared to the cuddly socially active marketing department.

33-yo Felix said Nike wanted to contract her 70% less after her pregnancy. She wanted the original value to stay in force even if she suffered slight underperformance in the months after childbirth. Her request is totally understandable. Surely Nike could have done some celebrity mother and child adverts to pluck at the heartstrings of the average person? Get all those mothers with newborns to sport a pair of Nike kicks and leotards as they push their strollers to yoga. Just the sort of mush that a marketing department craves.

High-end endorsements are extremely hard to get. The bigger the payout the higher the pressure and expectations thrust upon the star. Contracts are driven by athletic performance and the ability to drive sales off the back of it. These performance-based targets are likely to be written clearly in black and white. It sounds like Felix needed a much better sports agent to negotiate such clauses. Serena Williams had a child and her Nike endorsements rolled on unaffected. The tennis champ even narrated a “dream crazier” advert solely looking at women in sport.

Is Felix’s 70% haircut anything more than Nike’s endorsement team taking a view on her future performance when it comes to which brand ambassadors will keep driving sales? It must have made a judgement call that Felix was past her prime. If we looked at all the females sponsored by Nike, what rank is she within the long list of names? Usain Bolt hung up his golden boots at age 30.

It is unclear how many millions that Felix received from Nike every year. Sponsorship is slightly different from employment. There are lots of caveats in sports contracts which ensure that athletes behave responsibly “outside” the game to reflect the values of the organisation. One might feel some pity that the choice to have a child ruined her contract terms but Nike has not done anything illegal.

It is unlikely that any two Nike superstar endorsement contracts are the same. Michael Jordan ended up with his own brand within Nike. Undoubtedly he was paid better than an up and coming college NFL star. It is most likely that Serena Williams’ contract had many different term and conditions to Allyson Felix. If Felix signed her contract she took on all of the legalities within it, including the fine print. Unlike an employment contract, sponsorships terms can change on a whim.

The Nike sponsorship Rolodex is undoubtedly littered with stars – male and female – in their 30s, re-contracted at far lower rates than when they were in their prime. Felix wouldn’t be alone. Age, rather than maternity was probably the bigger driver for the Nike decision makers. The world of sports is brutal. Unless one is a Valentino Rossi of MotoGP fame, a Roger Federer/Serena Williams in tennis or an Usain Bolt in track & field, ongoing sponsorship tends to fade as these stars get put out to pasture.

Yet we are not Nike and we do not have the full facts of how it grants its limited marketing dollars. Perhaps we should ask why Adidas or Puma aren’t beating a path to Felix’s door to contract her and get some mileage out of the controversy? Nike knows the endorsement field probably better than most. The risk of her defection is minimal at best, therefore, Nike can drive hard bargains. Take it or leave it.
