Who knew? NYT opinion editor quits citing lack of integrity at the paper

NYT

NY Times opinion editor Bari Weiss has quit the paper effectively saying that the newspaper has lost any ability to seek balance post Trump’s 2016 election win. We post an excerpt of the resignation letter she wrote to her boss,

But the lessons that ought to have followed the election—lessons about the importance of understanding other Americans, the necessity of resisting tribalism, and the centrality of the free exchange of ideas to a democratic society—have not been learned. Instead, a new consensus has emerged in the press, but perhaps especially at this paper: that truth isn’t a process of collective discovery, but an orthodoxy already known to an enlightened few whose job is to inform everyone else...

...Twitter is not on the masthead of The New York Times. But Twitter has become its ultimate editor. As the ethics and mores of that platform have become those of the paper, the paper itself has increasingly become a kind of performance space. Stories are chosen and told in a way to satisfy the narrowest of audiences, rather than to allow a curious public to read about the world and then draw their own conclusions. I was always taught that journalists were charged with writing the first rough draft of history. Now, history itself is one more ephemeral thing molded to fit the needs of a predetermined narrative.

…There are terms for all of this: unlawful discrimination, hostile work environment, and constructive discharge. I’m no legal expert. But I know that this is wrong.

..some coworkers insist I need to be rooted out if this company is to be a truly “inclusive” one, while others post ax emojis next to my name. Still other New York Times employees publicly smear me as a liar and a bigot on Twitter with no fear that harassing me will be met with appropriate action. They never are

I do not understand how you have allowed this kind of behavior to go on inside your company in full view of the paper’s entire staff and the public. And I certainly can’t square how you and other Times leaders have stood by while simultaneously praising me in private for my courage. Showing up for work as a centrist at an American newspaper should not require bravery…

…Part of me wishes I could say that my experience was unique. But the truth is that intellectual curiosity—let alone risk-taking—is now a liability at The Times. Why edit something challenging to our readers, or write something bold only to go through the numbing process of making it ideologically kosher, when we can assure ourselves of job security (and clicks) by publishing our 4000th op-ed arguing that Donald Trump is a unique danger to the country and the world? And so self-censorship has become the norm.

What rules that remain at The Times are applied with extreme selectivity. If a person’s ideology is in keeping with the new orthodoxy, they and their work remain unscrutinized. Everyone else lives in fear of the digital Thunderdome. Online venom is excused so long as it is directed at the proper targets.

Who knew? So much for all the news that is fit to print.

FBI background checks for gun purchases surge 136% in June

God Bless America. The FBI has recorded that background checks for firearm purchases last month surged to 7.8 million, up 136%YoY. The highest number recorded in 20 years.

A survey done by the National Shooting Sports Foundation found dealers project around 40% of sales are to first-time buyers, an increase from the average.

Does this surge suggest voting intentions? Surely those buying guns won’t be supporting a party that backs defunding the police and has leaders like Speaker Pelosi who flippantly dismissed the destruction of public and private property by rioters as “they will do what they do!

Get woke, turn into a joke?

It seems that in the midst of announcing the retirement of the Redskins name, many others have been filing trademarks on what the new team might be called creating additional headaches for the owners.

Martin McCaulay has trademarked over 40 potential names and to maintain his trademark and be in compliance he sells merchandise for those names instead of merely squatting.

We don’t believe it was ever a good PR exercise for the franchise or the NFL but it just proves that getting woke has a price.

Given all of the money the Redskins will spend on PR companies, logo designers and merchandising experts, imagine if that money was actually deployed to programs assisting the very indigenous communities who won’t benefit one iota from a name change.

Have the cancel culture considered this? The fact that Native Americans are more likely to die of alcohol-related causes, diabetes or tuberculosis than others. Or that this community has the highest rate of intimate partner violence in the U.S. and twice the risk of child abuse and neglect?

The only thing the name change will do is make woke liberals feel better about themselves. We watch with interest to see whether any dent will be made in these ugly stats

How serious are the Redskins when they’re still selling merchandise with the logo?

Ultimately the Washington Redskins are a sporting franchise and the team website is still selling items bearing the Redskins name/logo, albeit at a discount. This is the same as L’Oreal removing the names of “skin-whitening” products but selling them anyway.

Makes us wonder if the management truly wished to reflect strict obedience to the cancel culture they would have immediately ceased the sale of these items too. They haven’t which speaks volumes about true commitment.

Put simply, the Redskins’ owners are proving to be unwilling passengers in this ordeal forced by sponsors and a sporting code which are holding them at gunpoint.

There is only one place the team and NFL are heading. The scrap heap. All so some woke liberals can appease some activists and feel good about themselves despite not creating one extra benefit to the very community they proclaim to support.

Redskins logo designed by Blackfeet tribal leader

Redskins

It was inevitable that the Washington Redskins would be pressured to change the name. Little do many people know that it was designed by a Blackfeet tribal leader, Walter “Blackie” Wetzel, back in 1972.

Wetzel, a former National Congress American Indian President, urged the Redskins in 1971 to change their logo from the burgundy and gold “R'” to the image that is about to be cancelled.

He was inspired by Chief Two Guns Whitecalf, a Blackfeet Chief whose likeness also appeared on the Buffalo nickel, minted from 1913-38.

Wetzel told WaPo in 2002 that, “It made us all so proud to have an Indian on a big-time team. It is only a small group of radicals who oppose those names. Indians are proud of Indians.

Will the Redskins choose a new name that honours American Indians or will it wilt to some other PC name to appease the mob?

In 2020, history doesn’t matter. Facts don’t matter. Only the feelings of woke liberals who protest on behalf of groups they haven’t consulted to make themselves feel less guilty about things they have nothing to apologise for.

We wonder just how the lives of American-Indians will be improved by the name change? Our bet is absolutely not one bit. We think NFL ratings will decline as fans can no longer enjoy the game without ever more political stunts being introduced.

Have black students demanded this?

A petition started by students at the University of Washington – which demands faculty staff mark black students more leniently – has gathered 26,000 signatures. Worse, the university believes it’s a good idea.

Nicole McNichols, UW Psychology Professor said, “Obviously, I support the petition and absolutely believe the accommodations it requests should be honored by all faculty. Students need all of the support and compassion we can afford to give them right now.”

What about Hispanic students? Don’t other minorities have a claim for leniency too? What about black trans students with disabilities? Should they get more marks?

If the students that signed up to the petition truly want to make it fair, perhaps the white students should agree to be marked down with a white privilege adjustment to atone for the sins of those they aren’t related to who may have committed crimes before they were born.

Ultimately, if these liberally minded students truly wish to stop discrimination, why demand a policy that actively encourages it? If they wish to stop systemic racism how does such segregationist policies help?

In closing, how many black students have demanded this? Were many consulted? We wouldn’t be surprised if many black students get frustrated at the basic tenet that these white liberal kids think without an artificial boost they can’t succeed on their own merits. That is about as condescending as it gets!

This is the perfect argument for why universities should be free. Absolutely no lessons about real life are being taught.

Rant over.

Petition to recall Seattle mayor approved by judge

The Recall Jenny Durkan campaign to remove the Democrat mayor of Seattle is underway after getting a King County Superior Court judge’s approval. Mayor Durkan was the individual who said CHAZ was an acceptable form of protest, even calling it a “summer of love” right up until the mob came to her $7m mansion. Never mind the deaths, the violence, destruction of private property, rapes, forcing whites to pay blacks $10 and demanding a whole host of supplies from the very democracy they wanted to overthrow. Our posts on Durkan can be seen here.

We view this as a good benchmark for anti-Democrat sentiment, especially given that Seattle and Washington are hard core blue states. Hillary Clinton garnered 52.5% of the vote vs Trump’s 36.8% in the 2016 election. Durkan won 56.25% of the 2017 mayoral election.

The Recall Durkan website notes,

Mayor Durkan’s complete negligence in protecting the rights and safety of the people of Seattle has made a clear case that she is no longer fit to govern.

Together, let’s keep making history and #FireTheMayor…

…For our petition to elicit a recall, the petitioners will need 56,202 physical signatures.

Over 36,000 have signed the change.org petition in the two days it has been approved.

Surely there are enough centre-of-the-road Democrats with common sense to join the movement to oust such an out of touch elected official.

When NYC residents took the law into their own hands in 1979

We’ve written quite a bit lately on the utterly hopeless NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio and his weakness in tackling crime.

We’ve written in the past about vigilantism in NYC several years ago and we see that inevitably, NY citizens will start to take the law into their own hands. They will have little choice.

The truth is the Guardian Angels have already returned, since deBlasio took office in 2014.

If we go back to the 1970s, when crime was surging, NYC’s population fell from 7,894,862 to 7,071,639 over the next decade.

What caused this? In the 1970s, NYC faced problems with the budget and by 1975 was teetering on bankruptcy. This led to shedding of public service jobs including the fire department and the NYPD. The fall in foot patrols in NYC saw crime soar. Homicide rates climbed as follows:

1960: 6.19 per 100,000 residents

1970: 14.14

1980: 25.60

1990: 30.66

2000: 8.44

2010: 6.53

2019: 3.75

2020: 4.26 (6 month run rate)

At this stage homicide in NYC is well off long term rates despite the sharp % increases seen since the death of George Floyd). One wonders whether the history of the 1980s will return as de Blasio cuts funding to the NYPD when the number of cops on the beat fell substantially. Will residents start moving to other parts of the country and hollow out the tax base?

We found this document interesting, especially the following statement:

While the NYPD has made approximately 40,000 fewer overall arrests so far this year compared with last year, gun arrests year-to-date as of July 5 are 1,679 vs. 1,683. We have also seen the impacts of legislative mandates sending offenders no longer eligible for bail back to the streets where they are being regularly rearrested and contributing to overall crime in the city.

Who knew? Now that NYPD cops are quitting in record numbers and new recruits aren’t being hired to replace them, what could possibly go wrong?

Expect to see more stories about the Guardian Angels in NYC as residents fill the hole that the virtue signaling segregationist mayor has opened.

To think how the mayor was so willing to use the NYPD as a Gestapo to fine residents for disobeying stay-at-home orders. Recall deBlasio even encouraged NYers to dob in their neighbors.

Another powerful unsolicited video from Josephine Valdez documenting the growing revolt against the Democrats as documented by the #WalkAway campaign.

She wrote,
