ACF threatens Tennis Australia with Corporations Act

It was only a matter of time. The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) has regurgitated a report it wrote on the increasing risks of heat stress on cricketers during Boxing Day tests by applying it the Australian Open tennis.

It chose the same partial voice to undertake the study.  The Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub (MCCCRH) openly states that it “conducts social research and leads impact focused projects to build media and policy infrastructure that adequately addresses climate change in Australia.”

Not balance. Just agenda based.

The main points were as follows:

“The MCCCRH finds”:

“Australian tennis is already experiencing the impact of climate change, with smoke from bushfires and extreme heat driven by climate change increasing health risks for players and the likelihood of match disruptions.

Haven’t we worked out that dreadful bush management is a root cause, not climate change? That despite 57 inquiries into bushfires since 1939 we still haven’t learnt how to maintain our bush land despite aborigines being successful custodians for 1,000s of years before climate change was even a thing? Incompetence seems to be the issue, not climate.

“Tennis authorities should consider a series of actions to protect players, such as extending the length of the tournament — to allow games to be cancelled in the hottest part of the day if it’s too hot on court — or moving the event to November or March.”

Has the ACF considered some players are fitter than others? Shouldn’t the players determine such things with TA, not a bunch of alarmists with an axe to grind?

“Climate change threats may soon represent ‘material financial issues’ for Tennis Australia and its directors, who could face liability under the Corporations Act for failing to adequately address and report these risks.

Do we really need to have the ACF resort to threats via the Corporations Act to shame Cricket Australia and Tennis Australia (TA) with unsettled science? Does it realize that corporations reporting on climate change has fallen to 14% from 22% over the last decade? 1000s of Aussie directors are already well aware of their risks without having the ACF throw the rule book in their face. So they disagree with you.

Will the ACF insure the risk of lost revenue if its alarmism they predict fails to eventuate? If the ACF is so confident in its prophecies it should have no qualms backing such a notion. Put its science where its mouth is.

On page 16, TA got a slap on the wrist for having ANZ as a sponsor because it supports the fossil fuel industry at $7.70 for every $1 it does on renewables. Could that be because of the relative risk profile, ACF? Does ANZ dictate to TA what it must do with the tournament other than contractually honour advertising exposure? Does TA have any rights to tell ANZ how it, a bank, deploys shareholder capital? No.

Although we do note the ACF commended TA for joining the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework and urges it to raise its voice for strong, meaningful climate action from our government.

The ACF should demand that TA restrict the Australian Open to players who walk, cycle or sail to the tournament. As the UN sports body states,

“Sport is not just a victim of climate change; it is also a contributor, through greenhouse gas emissions.

What better way to mitigate the dangers and show the very actions that will stop the climate emergency dead in its tracks by making the tennis players ditch fossil fuel derived transport of any sort to any future events and give up their carbon rackets and naphtha based synthetic clothing.

In closing, FNF Media hopes for the sake of consistency, that the ACF will guarantee it will publish a report on professional skiing competitions where skiers may have to brave record cold temperatures to compete? If such an event comes to pass, we can guarantee it would never see the light of day. After all we just had the coldest maximum summer temperature in history at Thredbo late last year.

By the way, here is the Melbourne forecast for the tournament and the peak temp hit in 1939.

ScoMo hires new spin doctor

There is no denying PM Scott Morrison has been in the wars. His media spin doctors have administered arsenic instead of Advil. While we still contend that the media beat up on ScoMo has been ridiculous in the extreme, he ironically needs to push back on them hard and preempt their sheer predictability.

If FNF Media was the PM’s media advisor he would be told to take a leaf out of Ricky Gervais’ book (without expletives of course) and speak in truths, rather than cave into polished and carefully scripted politically correct platitudes. Nobody buys it.

Media is ubiquitous these days. No longer do we need to pander to the mainstream outlets by handing out privilege passes for positive coverage. Truth counts. Facts trump fiction.

Ricky Gervais’ 8-minute speech will end up being viewed factor fold levels higher than the Golden Globes (GG) themselves because he popped their bubble. Sadly the person that hired him will be shot for woke reasons. If NBC has any brains they’d get Ricky back for GG 2021 to arrest the long term collapse in ratings. People would watch it for his performance alone. His comment” if ISIS started a streaming service you’d all call your agents, wouldn’t you!” was so on point.

Gervais was interviewed prior to the performance to discuss the vegan menu that DiCaprio was raving about. He said, ” I think it’s great that 800 people are trying to save the planet and arriving in separate limos to eat some veg!

Because the common person isn’t stupid. Most view Hollywood celebrities as totally out of touch. Gervais frazzled so many raw nerves that there wasn’t a loose sphincter in the audience. It is how roasting is done.

There is a beauty in pushback. Trump has a Gervais about him. He smokes the media all the time and gets 24-7 media coverage for free. The Dems could raise $1tn in campaign funds and Trump would still get more airtime.

Instead of being hunted, he becomes the hunter. The derangement of the journalists feeds on itself and ends up making the media look sillier by the minute.

Given the press has such little regard for context or perspective, ScoMo should call on the stupidity of the questions asked and put the heat back on them. When people read the 12th unoriginal slam of his trip to Hawaii, it doesn’t exactly make audiences pine for more of the same.

The idea of ScoMo bloodying the nose of a lazy reporter would work way better for him than whatever advice he is getting now.

The viewing public can determine what they see. They reward authenticity- period. Sincerity is underrated in politics. Admitting mistakes is refreshing. Recall Bob Hawke’s 1989 admission of being unfaithful to his wife. The tears. He still won the 1990 election. Very few politicians have been so loved and respected by both side of the political divide. It was his what you see is what you get persona.

Despite the press highlighting how Hawke’s death – a week before the 2019 election – would tug at the heartstrings of Labor voters, it only exposed how Shorten couldn’t hold a flame to the beer-sculling larrikin. Shorten hemmed himself to kiss-of-death Kristina Keneally. Albo is making a similar mistake with Richard Marles. Authenticity wins. Trump is authentic. A bull artist maybe but he never hides the fact.

ScoMo has 3 years to fix a tough few months. He is far from over. A man who pulled off an election coup like last May has plenty of runway.

Now he needs to smash the media for their hollow clickbait. Many are criticizing him for being like Trump. FNF Media’s criticism is that he hasn’t been enough like the Donald.

ScoMo should be taking it to the opposition for point scoring on fires by making ridiculous claims of climate change connections that cost them victory in 2019. He should point out hard facts and tell Aussie’s that no sacred cows, whether fire chiefs or arsonists, will be spared in the post mortem. He can thump the table saying he is sick of the buck passing.

The media’s agenda is obvious. Just take the nonsense over Tony Abbott. While in the political sphere he couldn’t catch a break from the media. Even his RFS service was seen as self-indulgent. Now he is being praised for his heroics for going inside a burning house because he isn’t a political threat. It isn’t hard to work out the left-leaning media is out for ScoMo’s scalp. ScoMo should throw their hypocrisy and double standards back in their faces.

No time to practice a PR agency inspired Ali-shuffle to win some brownie points which won’t be awarded. AmTime to channel Ricky Gervais and land some cold hard punches.

Uninformed bash ScoMo thanks to media which loves to misinform

The optics were awful. Residents of Cobargo, in the Labor held electorate of Eden-Monaro, hurled expletives at PM Scott Morrison. People shunned handshakes and the PM, in hindsight was a little daft trying to force a few for the cameras. It just made a bad situation worse. It was almost Malcolm Turnbullesque in its awkwardness. Still the media got exactly what they wanted – clickbait.

Most of us can’t fathom losing a home to raging bushfires. Yet the media beat up is bordering on Morrison Derangement Syndrome (MDS). Do the press corps honestly believe that Morrison’s popularity would suffer a blow from those assembled? Nary a Coalition voter in that mob.

The reporting has been pathetic. Little or no attempt to point out how the fire services are financed and funded. Next to no coverage of the voices of the volunteer fire fighters who have blamed years of green tape preventing them from mitigating the damage we’re experiencing now. Just feeding narratives and worse incorrectly apportioning blame.

How eerily silent the media has been over Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s two week holiday during these bushfires. Where was the demand for her to come back? No, just kick the PM for having a holiday. Don’t forget to take a swipe at his faith for added mileage.

Like most crises, it’s easy to become an armchair expert when hindsight is 20-20. The simplest thing to do is criticize whoever is at the helm. So MDS reigns supreme on social media as people seek moral preening.

How many are aware that in order to conduct hazard reductions, a combination of local councils, fire authorities and state governments (Dept of Planning, Infrastructure & Environment) need to issue permits? Not the federal government. See below:

NSW

Queensland

Victoria

South Australia

Western Australia

Tasmania

Northern Territory

ACT

So in short, most of this bushfire hazard reduction system is out of the ‘legal’ remit of the PM. What leadership can he truly provide without running roughshod over the state premiers? Even if he did so, nothing practical could have been achieved in such a short time. Not as if you buy fire trucks off a dealership floor.

Should he give the states more cash? Speak in platitudes? Promise the world before having completed the due diligence on the shortcomings that has led to the disaster? Hand out water bottles? Buy a whole fleet of water bombers and keep them parked in hermetically sealed hangars at Canberra Airport for states to borrow as needed?

All the decisions surrounding equipping the fire services are state decisions. This makes sense as each state has a different nature portfolio to oversee.

ScoMo has made sensible commentary to the effect that the hazard reduction regulations need serious overhaul. It is still up to the states to legislate the changes.

FNF Media has suggested a full audit over the several decades within the fire services themselves. Find out what went wrong? The management errors. The processes by which terrible equipment and fuel load choices have been made. Listen to the volunteers who are singing an entirely different tune to the fire management. Don’t forget there is nothing more honest than the voice of someone willing to sacrifice time and money to serve their fellow citizens.

When will the media grow up and start some honest reporting?

As Mark Twain once said,

If you don’t read the newspaper you are uninformed; if you do read the newspaper you are misinformed.”

Indeed, it’s been a rough couple of weeks for the PM. He has handled the situation poorly. Albanese has extracted some political mileage at his press conferences.

Yet politics is a strange game. Already the media is chomping at the bit in predicting ScoMo’s downfall.

Morrison already won the unwinnable election. Canadian PM Trudeau won a second term despite a myriad of scandals where he was found guilty, black face, nauseating political correctness and endless hypocrisy.

Morrison may have many shortcomings but he still proves why opposition leaders can’t run campaigns on being less worse than the incumbent. Moreover he has many years left in this term to make amends.

Tesla worth more than major brands with 1,046 years of combined experience

Wonderful to see Wall St bull at its finest. Trip Chowdhry of Global Equities Research put a 2030 price target of $4,000 on Tesla or around 10x the current price.

Amazing to think that he believes that Tesla would be worth 25% more than Toyota, VW, BMW, Daimler, Ferrari, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Ford, GM & Fiat-Chrysler combined.

Sure, that’s plausible. Who wouldn’t believe that the industrial might of the aforementioned world’s most respected brands – with a combined 1,046 years of production expertise – will be worth less than a company who is led by a dope smoking CEO who cares little for corporate governance?

That isn’t to say innovation and disruption can’t end a millennia of progress. The only problem is the market fails to realize is that Toyota invests 10x what Tesla does in electric vehicle R&D every year and had its research geeks develop solid state lithium ion batteries for fun.

Hottest ever day in Oz? Only if you ignore history

Can you really trust anything that comes out of the mouth of the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM)? Maybe it is the hottest within their records but maybe that is the point –  they need better records.  It only has a warming bias.

It wasn’t that long ago that the BoM said Penrith was the warmest spot on the planet, recording its highest temperature ever, having “broken the all-time maximum temperature record for … the Sydney metropolitan area.” Unfortunately, as alarmist bells were ringing inside the BoM, it forgot to record the fact Penrith Lakes started recording temperatures from 1995 and it missed a much higher temperature recorded in nearby Richmond in 1939. There was no question it was hot, but perhaps heat-stroke caused the BoM to make this embarrassing error.

Even worse BoM is anti-cooling. At Goulburn Airport, the lowest ever July temperature was –-9.1°C, recorded in 1988. In 2017 that was broken when the temperature dropped to -10.4°C. The BoM recorded -10.0°C. Silence. Where was the BoM when it was the coldest recorded day in summer just a few weeks back? Deathly silent.

Maybe an organisation that has 85% of its staff at APS6 or above (i.e. senior management) needs alarmism to justify its existence.

As Joanne Nova writes brilliantly in her column today,

But look at the temperatures reported in newspapers across the country during the month of January in 1896 when people were going mad with axes, dropping dead in coaches and railway stations and birds were falling lifeless from the trees?

She continues,

So when all is said and told, it is clear our BoM needs a thorough investigation into the practices.
And shame on the media for parroting this alarmism with no effort to fact check the claims. They are too busy having a go at PM Scott Morrison for taking a holiday and not being on the ground dispensing water bottles at bushfire sites. Did they forget that a recent PM is actually fighting fires right now? Obviously Tony Abbott doesn’t count!

Of course the BoM will tell us it was the hottest “average” day. Can we be sure every single number was measured the same as it was the previous time with the same number of readings? As far as averages go, statistically speaking, what was the mean and median? What were the outliers? What were the errors?

Given the BoM has been caught placing temperature equipment in areas that amplify heat (i.e. shrinking the size of Stevenson screen boxes or placing next to bitumen (which we might add doesn’t meet BoM’s own criteria)) and has hid 40 years worth of hot days, is it any wonder we get such outcomes?
In closing we should think that the taxpayer doesn’t need to hand over $1m a day for the BoM to peddle climate alarmism. There are plenty of bodies that will gladly do that for free.

Nativity scene in cages

A Claremont United Methodist church has decided to put the nativity scene inside cages to “consider the most well-known refugee family in the world.”

Bleeding liberal hearts don’t want to accept that if citizens don’t like particular laws, they should vote to change them. Simple. This follows on from a similar stunt in June 2019 where woke artists in NY protested kids in cages by using 24 mockups complete with audio being blasted through speakers of crying and wailing kids. pluck at those heartstrings.

While humanitarian crises are nothing to laugh about, for all of the accusations of heavy-handed, inhumane, jackboot wearing authoritarian ICE & CBP officials we hear so much about, how is it that in full knowledge of all of that, these illegal immigrants still choose to risk everything to come to America. They know that going through the legal process of filing for refugee status at an official border will likely be rejected, therefore choose to enter via the illegal route.

It wasn’t so long ago that Trump suggested bussing illegal immigrants to predominantly Democrat-controlled sanctuary cities basing it on the idea that if they proclaim publicly how welcome they are there should be no issues. How these virtue-signalling politicians howled in protest.

The greater irony is that a growing number of illegal immigrants are choosing to move OUT of sanctuary cities. In 2007, 7.7mn (63.1%) lived in the 20 largest metros to 6.5mn (60.7%) in 2016 according to Pew. During that time 1.5m illegal immigrants were deported (12.2mn ->10.7mn).

Yet the media, too eager to bash Trump on any occasion with respect to his border policies were forced to issue retractions last month. Ouch.  Who could forget when Manfred Nowak, an expert from the U.N. Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty, claimed that 100,000 migrant children were detained by the Trump administration. He also indicated that it was the “world’s highest rate” of detained children. How the mainstream media had to take a slice of humble pie the following day when Nowak acknowledged that the cited number was from 2015 — under President Obama.

No one with a heartbeat wants to see screaming kids locked in cages. Separated? Well, there is a good reason for that. When even the likes of left-leaning HuffPo admitted in December 2014 that 80% of women and girls are sexually assaulted while trying to make it across the border there is a good reason to question the proof of identity of the supposed parents. Even if 90% of parent/children pairs are legit, what of the 10% that aren’t? Do ICE risk it?

To emphasize the danger of lax screening, multiple kids were found dead after being abandoned once across the border as their usefulness as a golden ticket on compassionate grounds had expired. If that isn’t some of the worst forms of child abuse then what is? Moreover, these people are hardly the type that decent Americans would want to embrace with open arms! Come one, come all?

While there is no doubt a case to be made for illegals who could make wonderful contributions to society, perhaps some stats from ICE’s latest annual report should shed light on reality.

ICE’s 2018 annual report notes the following situation at the border:

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) has continued to use resources as effectively and efficiently as possible to enforce the nation’s immigration laws.

In FY2018, ERO arrested 158,581 aliens, 90% of whom had criminal convictions (66%), pending criminal charges (21%), or previously issued final orders (3%). The overall arrest figure represents an 11% increase over FY2017.

  • 2015: 101,800
  • 2016: 110,104
  • 2017: 143,470
  • 2018: 158,581

The number of individuals detained by ERO is driven by enforcement actions taken by ICE and apprehensions made by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). In FY2018, 396,448 people were initially booked into an ICE detention facility, an increase of 22.5% over FY2017.  Book-ins to detention resulting from CBP arrests increased by 32% over the previous year, illustrating a surge in illegal border crossings.

  • 2015: 307,342
  • 2016: 352,882
  • 2017: 323,591
  • 2018: 396,448

In FY2018, ERO removed 256,086 illegal aliens, reflecting an increase of 13% over FY2017. The majority of removals (57%) were convicted criminals. Additionally, 5,914 of the removed illegal aliens were classified as either known or suspected gang members or terrorists, which is a 9% increase over FY2017.

  • 2015: 235,413
  • 2016: 240,255
  • 2017: 226,119
  • 2018: 256,086

Here are some of the reasons for arrest – both criminal convictions and charges – for 2017 (2018):

  • Driving under the influence : 80,547 (80,730)
  • Dangerous drugs: 76,503 (76,585)
  • Immigration violation:  62,517 (63,166)
  • Assault: 48,454 (50,753)
  • Larceny: 20,356 (20,340)
  • Burglary: 12,836 (12,663)
  • Fraud: 12,398 (12,862)
  • Illegal weapon possession: 11,173 (11,766)
  • Sex offences: 6,664 (6,888)
  • Stolen Vehicles: 6,174 (6,261)
  • Forgery: 5,210 (5,158)
  • Homicide: 1,886 (2,028)
  • Kidnapping: 2,027 (2,085)
  • Prostitution racketeering: 1,572 (1,739)

Since the initial surge at the Southwest border (SWB) in FY2014, there has been a significant increase in the arrival of both family units (FMUAs) and unaccompanied alien children (UACs). In FY2018, approximately 50,000 UACs and 107,000 aliens processed as FMUAs were apprehended at the SWB by the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP). These numbers represent a marked increase from FY2017 when approximately 41,000 UACs and 75,000 FMUA were apprehended by USBP.

While USBP routinely turns FMUA apprehensions over to ICE for removal proceedings, ICE is severely limited by various laws and judicial actions from detaining family units through the completion of removal proceedings. For UAC apprehensions, DHS is responsible for the transfer of custody to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) within 72 hours, absent exceptional circumstances. HHS is similarly limited in their ability to detain UACs through the pendency of their removal proceedings. When these UACs are released by HHS or FMUA are released from DHS custody, they are placed onto the non-detained docket, which currently has more than 2,641,589 cases and results in decisions not being rendered for many years. Further, even when removal orders are issued, very few aliens from the non-detained docket comply with these orders and instead join an ever-growing list of 565,892 fugitive aliens.”

CM will quote Thomas Sowell again,

A passionate commitment to social justice is no substitute for knowing what the hell you’re talking about.

SBS, some context and perspective would be nice

SBS reported that Australia is on track to exceed its 2030 emissions targets by 16 million tons C02-e. Based on the last set of data on published GHG emissions, that would mean a c.3% increase.

Put against total emissions around the world, Australia’s evil politicians would submit us to an extra 0.03% to the atmosphere. Our population by 2030 is expected to grow by 21%. So on that basis, per capita emissions will be lower.

Never mind reporting that SBS. Just stick to sensationalizing numbers without context and perspective. You know your adoring readers won’t care because it fits the alarmist narrative.

Although an issue, SBS couldn’t resist giving a partisan taxpayer funded kick to the guts of MP Angus Taylor for good measure.
