Liberal artists cave to the cancel culture days after co-signing a letter condemning it

Image

Remember those brave maverick left-leaning artists who co-signed JK Rowling’s letter to decry the cancel culture we wrote about yesterday?

Several days later, several have withdrawn their support after surrendering to the threat of being cancelled themselves.

Author Jennifer Finney Boylan tweeted, “I did not know who else had signed that letter…I thought I was endorsing a well-meaning, if vague, message against internet shaming. I did know Chomsky, Steinem, and Atwood were in, and I thought, good company.

Historian Kerri Greenidge also tweeted, “I do not endorse this @Harpers letter. I am in contact with Harpers about a retraction.

So let us get this right. The very people who co-signed a letter highlighting the anxiety of cancel culture over the anxiety that they might be cancelled for being anxious about cancel culture due to guilt-by-association just proved the point way better than JK Rowling’s letter ever could.

So much for free speech. Cancel culture is alive and well.

Liberals write open letter condemning cancel culture before it eats them

Harry Potter author JK Rowling has written an open letter co-signed by 150 others criticizing the cancel culture.

It is sort of a sign when liberal artists start to see that the cancel culture is coming for them too.

Our cultural institutions are facing a moment of trial. Powerful protests for racial and social justice are leading to overdue demands for police reform, along with wider calls for greater equality and inclusion across our society, not least in higher education, journalism, philanthropy, and the arts. But this needed reckoning has also intensified a new set of moral attitudes and political commitments that tend to weaken our norms of open debate and toleration of differences in favor of ideological conformity. As we applaud the first development, we also raise our voices against the second.

In a touch of irony, the letter criticizes the right for its hand in illiberal thought and cancel culture. Although that was probably done to appease the left reading it. Despite conservative speakers being banned from presenting at universities or the plethora of radical left activists pulling down statues, demanding the name of pancake syrup be changed, renaming skin creams, removing cinematic art and defunding the police, somehow the right has been the problem.

Although the letter comes to an uncomfortable acceptance that the left is the bigger problem as these artists can now see it is their own that is baying for their blood and the right actually defending their free speech. Better late than never.

Still we await the cancel culture coming after the 150 co-signatories anyway.

Halle Berry apologizes for gender appropriation

Now acting is off limits.

Halle Berry has issued an apology to the cancel culture mob for accepting a role to play a transgender character. She will no longer play the part and will now use her cisgender voice to promote better representation. Cringeworthy.

Aren’t actors/actresses chosen for their ability to act as those they are not? Isn’t the point of picking stars to play roles connected to box office takings?

Should Berry apologize for playing a CIA agent in a James Bond flick? Should CIA agents be able to tell their own story? Where was her voice for such vocational appropriation? What about Catwoman?

Maybe a real psychopathic serial killer should have played Hannibal Lector and not Anthony Hopkins because it might have engaged in homicidal appropriation.

Here’s an idea. Perhaps Hollywood should set up a politburo staffed with radical Marxists who will dictate to producers who they can typecast in roles for their movies. Perhaps stories should also be vetted. Historical movies will erase fact and be rewritten. Truth be told we’re already there.

The movie Dunkirk was criticized for not having enough actors of colour or women in it and First Man deleted the scene of Neil Armstrong planting an American flag on the moon, sort of a significant point in history that celebrated American exceptionalism.

Self loathing is just getting so pathetic and boring.

Disney inks new deal in woke fantasy

San Francisco 49ers Banner Mickey Mouse NFL Football House Flag

Seems Disney has caught the social justice bug. It has inked a deal with perpetual victim Colin Kaepernick, a man whose only claims to fame were kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality and sacrificing the backup slot as a quarterback on the San Francisco 49ers NFL team.

After slamming America in a July 4th tweet about rejecting the “celebration of white supremacy” (a day he openly cheered under Obama), the very next tweet he celebrated the very open capitalist society that helped him attain a deal with a company run by an evil white man at the root of his oppression.

If Kaepernick had principles he would have rejected the deal for letting Disney use his cause for a pittance to promote its own corporate social responsibility goals to publish in the next annual report to appease woke investment firms which are in no place to lecture anyone on ethics or morals.

Kaep’s deal will extend across all Disney platforms, including Walt Disney Television, ESPN, Hulu, Pixar and The Undefeated. ESPN noted that the “partnership will focus on telling scripted and unscripted stories that explore race, social injustice and the quest for equity.”

We look forward to the next Pixar film about Kaepernick where it can teach kids about participation trophies and how feelings matter more than facts.

Disney Executive Chairman Bob Iger made a typically woke PR drafted response,

During this unprecedented time, The Walt Disney Company remains committed to creating diverse and inclusive content that resonates and matters…Colin’s experience gives him a unique perspective on the intersection of sports, culture and race, which will undoubtedly create compelling stories that will educate, enlighten and entertain, and we look forward to working with him on this important collaboration.”

Kaep said, “I look forward to sharing the docuseries on my life story, in addition to many other culturally impactful projects we are developing.

Kaeprnick’s production company Ra Vision Media has hired Jemele Hill, a contributor to the left-wing The Atlantic newspaper, as a producer. She had no qualms besmirching all NASCAR fans as racists over the Bubba Wallace noose hoax. So we can be assured of the balance that will permeate across Kaep’s docuseries.

To cap off the joke, perpetual virtue signaller Alyssa Milano congratulated Kaepernick’s new contract on Twitter. Yes, the same Alyssa Milano that chastised the use of the name Washington Redskins when she had no qualms using her face to sell the team’s fashion line.

Good to see that if one screams victimhood loud and long enough, corporate America will join the scam to mint a dollar off the back of it and the supposed victims will have no qualms parking rage over white supremacy if they can make a decent buck themselves.

The truth hurts

What a tangled web we weave when first we practise to deceive!

How ironic that the papers that practice social justice the hardest have the most troubled pasts.

The Guardian was founded by a slave owner. The NY Times founding editor wrote an editorial which supported the right of slave owners to recover escaped slaves according to Prager University.

#CancelNYT ?

Are we witnessing sporting suicide?

People used to be able to watch sports in order to be able escape financial stress, relationship pressure, horrible bosses or politics for a couple of hours. Now politics comes as standard and is being actively shoved straight in paying customers’ faces.

The NBA has just announced it will paint “Black Lives Matter” on the courtside.

Retired NFL defensive end Marcellus Wiley explained why he thought it is a bad idea for the NBA to do it based on the divisive manifesto of BLM.

This follows on from the NFL’s pandering to identity politics and promotion of segregation by introducing a “black national anthem” before Week 1 games.

As one astute reader posted this with respect to the NFL post we wrote today,

If this causes a loss of attendance will the excuse be that those missing were therefore racist? And how does that help pay the bills? What will be the steps taken to address shortfalls in revenue ? Presumably reductions in salaries and jobs to those whose livelihood depends on the attendance?

This is a very emotive issue and no one is denying that it is not an important one but enforcing dictats onto paying customers is never a good idea – asking for help to change is better than demanding change and alienating a section of society who for the most part were already onside -you cannot force their cooperation – you will just make reasonable people unreasonable.

We think the NBA and NFL are making extremely poor decisions. As corporations they have that right but since when has treating customers with contempt been a good strategy?? Gillette anyone?

We wrote a piece on the divisive nature of sports being ruined by political activism a few weeks back.

NFL turning the playing field into a political football

The NFL is making all the missteps to destroy the franchise. It thinks that introducing segregation will solve for racism.

The NFL is planning to play “Lift Ev’ry Voice And Sing,” dubbed the “Black national anthem,” ahead of “Star Spangled Banner‘ before all Week 1 games. Watch this become ahead of every game.

Why don’t Hispanics or other minorities that were victims of police brutality get their anthem played too? What about the trans community? Are they any less worthy?

According to ESPN, the NFL is also considering “listing the names of victims on uniforms through decals on helmets or patches on jerseys” and will likely “produce educational programs about the victims.”

What if some of those victims were armed and shooting at police? Will they be honoured? Will their true histories be taught or airbrushed as defenseless martyrs?

Before the NFL starts virtue signaling how “with the times” it is, do fans want to be lectured to by a league where 713 different players between 2000-2014 have been arrested for the following shocking list of charges – rape, murders, shootings, animal cruelty, prostitution rings, assault, robbery, illegal gun possession, DUI and resisting arrest.

Maybe list the names of those 713 players on uniforms for their crimes first.

There isn’t a soul on the planet who isn’t aware of what is going on. For the overwhelming majority of those who condemn racism, why do the left think drumming ever more sanctimonious activism is necessary? If the belief is such tokenism will swing racists, this identity politics based tribalism will force the exact opposite outcome of that intended. Shaming doesn’t work, especially if wrapped in hypocrisy.

If we were advising the Redskins response to Nike

Nike has stopped selling Washington Redskins gear and won’t resume sales until the NFL team changes its name.

Nike, alongside FedEx and PepsiCo have been put under pressure by activist investors. We can absolutely guarantee that the ultimate customers of money managers – individuals – want decent and sustainable returns, not woke virtue signaling.

Given investment houses often preach about the importance of accurate numbers, due diligence and shareholder returns, why not accept that over 90% of Native Americans have no issue with the name? Have Native Americans come out on mass demanding the name change?

The thing is that the majority demanding the change haven’t bothered to consult the very people who don’t appear to be bothered by it. Another typical woke liberal talking point to post to social media feeds to make themselves feel morally superior despite the fact that the majority don’t represent the very people they claim to.

What woeful governance practices to cave in to activists, who often don’t meet the very guidelines they demand of others.

Perhaps the Washington Redskins should return serve on Nike and demand that using a name from Greek mythology is cultural appropriation and not inclusive of the trans community. It should also request Nike stop making products that use cotton because of its links to slavery.

Furthermore, the use of synthetic materials that rely on the fossil fuels industry must be banned to show its commitment to combatting climate change.

The Redskins management should also demand that Nike force any staff member, executive, supplier, contractor or sports figure they sponsor not use Mercedes for its former links to slavery.

The cancel culture must apply across the board.

#PushBack. The corporate world has no place lecturing anyone on morals.
