Victorian Premier Dan Andrews is pushing for state parliament to approve a 12 month extension of the ‘state of emergency‘.
Since when does a virus operate to a strict timetable? When will these politicians admit that the advice they have received has been so poor? Instead they double down on duff recommendations from medical activists who have been wildly wrong and bear little or no responsibility for their calls.
The irony is that Andrews seemingly enjoys the extension of power created by his own incompetence. It gives him the opportunity to appeal as a great crisis leader when reality couldn’t be further from the truth.
“Again, I am very keen to ensure that we have a majority of support…I would say to them we need to protect public health...The most logical, the most prudent thing to do is to simply accept the fact that we have a need for rules, of one form or another…There can be no economic rebuilding or very little else until we fix this problem and are back into a manageable space…That is what this is about, nothing more, nothing less.”
Pretty much everything he has done since coronavirus kicked off has had the opposite effect. If Andrews’ team had a mandate to screw up, it couldn’t have done a better job. What an utter joke.
The federal government should do its utmost to limit aid to Victoria until its government wakes up. By showing leniency, outside of support by the ADF, it will end up hurting the overall economy even more.
There are plenty of examples out there about what is working in terms of getting on top of Coronavirus. Sweden has shown herd immunity has more or less been achieved. Contact tracing a la Taiwan works. Instead it is a one size fits all strategy in Victoria.
Presuming a coronavirus cure isn’t found after another 12 months, will he extend it another 12? Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
The irony is that Premier Andrews honestly believes his leadership is the final word in seamless execution.
